FORT WASHINGTON, Pa., December 30, 2016 – A new survey conducted online among over 2,000 U.S. adults by Harris Poll on behalf of Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRI), a leading provider of weight-management products and services, reveals that one in two Americans who have ever resolved to lose weight for the New Year claim they are/were very/somewhat willing to go to extreme measures to do so.
For many, the New Year is synonymous with resolutions — 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s Resolutions, but only eight percent fully achieve their resolution, according to a study from the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology.
“We often make unrealistic resolutions, especially when it comes to losing weight,” says Dawn Zier, President and CEO of Nutrisystem, Inc. “We make it too difficult on ourselves. Extreme measures are just hard to keep up, in addition to being bad for you. As a result, often by the third week in January, resolutions begin to die.”
Studies have shown that the single best predictor of long-term weight loss, is short-term weight loss, as early results positively reinforce new behaviors. With this in mind, Nutrisystem recently announced the clinically-tested Nutrisystem® Lean13 program, designed to deliver weight loss of up to 13 pounds and seven inches in the first month. As with all Nutrisystem® programs, it provides safe and meaningful weight loss with no fads or gimmicks. Plans include comprehensive support and counseling options from trained weight loss coaches, registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators available seven days a week from the Company’s award-winning contact center.
In addition, the health benefits resulting from even modest weight loss are evident. Losing five to ten percent of body weight can lead to improvements in blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugars. [1] A seven percent weight loss for those at high risk for prediabetes can reduce risk of diabetes by 58%. [2]
“We are committed to providing customers with weight-loss solutions that are not extreme. We don’t believe in fad diets,” added Zier. “We are about educating customers on how to lose that healthy one to two pounds per week consistently and learning how to keep it off. And if you start now, you could be down 40 pounds by summer.”
